Tourism Ireland has prioritised North America as a market which offers a strong return on investment, in terms of holiday visitors and expenditure. Visitors from the North American markets of the United States and Canada tend to stay longer and travel more widely around the island. In 2019, we welcomed 1.98 million visitors from North America to the island of Ireland (-3% on 2018), who spent €1.77/£1.56 billion during their time here (-3%).

  • In 2019, the United States delivered 1.7 million visitors and €1.6/£1.4 billion in revenue to the island of Ireland. That year, the US was our most important market for overseas revenue and our second-largest source of tourists.
  • Canada delivered 248,000 visitors and €209/£183 million in revenue.

In 2019, there were 1.9 million North American visitors to the Republic of Ireland (-3% on 2018), who spent €1.7 billion (-2%). There were 280,000 visitors from North America to Northern Ireland (-8% on 2018), who spent £79 million.
