Belfast Mela, Northern Ireland’s largest celebration of cultural diversity, will return in August 2026 for its landmark 20th anniversary, bringing nine days of music, dance, food, theatre, art and wellbeing experiences to venues across the city.

Over the two decades, Mela has grown into a vibrant platform for cultural exchange, showcasing traditions and contemporary creativity from around the world while promoting inclusion and community engagement.

Running from 22 to 30 August 2026, the festival will transform public spaces and iconic locations throughout Belfast into hubs of international culture, offering visitors opportunities to experience global traditions, performances and cuisines.

More than a festival, Belfast Mela has established itself as a symbol of the city’s growing diversity and its commitment to cultural understanding. Drawing together communities from different backgrounds, the event offers a space where people can discover new traditions, celebrate shared values and connect through creativity.

Highlights include:

  • Culture Land, showcasing traditional art forms, music, dance, language and rituals through workshops and live demonstrations.
  • Baby Bollywood, a family-focused area featuring dance classes, storytelling, crafts, costume play and performances for children.
  • World of Wellbeing, offering opportunities to explore yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, Thai massage and wellness traditions from around the world.
  • Little Asia, celebrating East and Southeast Asian cultures through martial arts displays, K-pop dance battles, calligraphy workshops and authentic food experiences.
  • Taste the World Theatre, where chefs will demonstrate signature dishes and share culinary traditions.
  • Feast of Fire, the festival’s chilli-eating competition, where contestants compete for the title of Mela Chilli Champion.
  • The Medina, inspired by the atmosphere of a traditional Tunisian marketplace, combining crafts, food, performance and cultural exchange.
  • The Wilding, a sensory trail exploring human relationships with animals through cultural, ecological and mythological storytelling

Mela Carnival Opens Festival Celebrations

The festival will begin with the annual Mela Carnival, a large-scale multicultural parade through Belfast city centre featuring more than 800 performers, including dancers, musicians, drummers, circus artists and giant puppets. Participants will represent cultural traditions from Africa, India, South America, Eastern Europe and many other regions.

Earth Child Takes to the Skies

A major highlight of this year’s programme is Earth Child, a new outdoor spectacle created to commemorate the festival’s 20th anniversary. Taking place at the Titanic Slipways, the aerial performance follows the story of a child searching for balance in a world in crisis, guided by the elemental forces of Air, Water, Fire and Earth. Combining aerial dance, live music, drumming, storytelling, lighting effects and pyrotechnics, the production will feature performers suspended 35 metres above the ground from two towering cranes overlooking Belfast’s waterfront

Mela Day Brings the World to Belfast

The festival will conclude with Mela Day at Botanic Gardens, the event’s flagship celebration and largest public gathering.

The park will be transformed into a Global Village featuring international food, crafts, performances and cultural experiences.

Five stages will host a programme of live music and dance, with performances spanning Bollywood bhangra, Turkish folk music, Brazilian samba, Japanese Taiko drumming, Celtic-African fusion and Roma jazz.

Food remains central to the Mela experience, with visitors able to explore dishes from across the globe. Street food vendors will offer cuisine from India, Thailand, Pakistan, the Caribbean, Mexico, China, Syria and other countries, alongside live cooking demonstrations at the Taste the World Theatre.

The programme will also highlight traditional culinary techniques, heritage recipes and food stories from diverse communities, while artisan producers from across Northern Ireland will showcase homemade delicacies, spices and speciality products.

Mela Day will feature a series of themed cultural zones designed to offer interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.
