Mayo Dark Sky Festival: From Sunrise to Starlight

Mayo Dark Sky, Co. Mayo

With its Wild Atlantic Way coastline, brooding landscapes and pristine skies, County Mayo is a destination worth exploring from dawn to dusk. Autumn is the perfect time to visit, when the county celebrates its spectacular night skies with the annual Mayo Dark Sky Festival (30 October –1 November).

The festival takes place in Mayo Dark Sky Park, where the low level of light pollution has gained it Gold Tier accreditation making it one of the best places in the world to see stars, meteors and even the dancing aurora. Named International Dark Sky Place of the Year 2024, the park attracts serious astronomers and amateur stargazers alike. In early autumn the skies are dark from 6pm and the weather can be mild and clear enabling visitors to see a host of twinkling stars and constellations including Orion, Cassiopeia, double star Albireo and the beautiful Pleiades star cluster.

With the world’s attention once again turning towards the heavens as major space exploration ramps up, people are drawn to developing a connection to the cosmos. The Mayo Dark Sky Festival is a wonderful opportunity to take the first steps into stargazing or deepen an already passionate interest.

The three-day festival is packed with amazing stargazing opportunities and this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. Featuring guided evening walks to view and learn about the Milky Way, expert talks on astronomy, biodiversity and culture, planetarium shows, family-friendly fun, an exhibition of fabulous night-time photography, and live music concerts, the festival presents a day-to-night programme to enthral and entertain.

The Mayo Dark Sky Park stretches from the Atlantic coast to the mountains encompassing the beautiful Wild Nephin National Park and is a truly unspoilt region on the island. A range of waymarked trails in the park, from gentle boardwalk routes over bogland to more challenging hikes, offer the chance for festival goers to explore this stunning landscape by day before delving into astral wonders after dark.

Cyclists and walkers alike can also enjoy the magnificent scenery along the nearby  Great Western Greenway. Voted one of the top three cycle trails in the world by the New York Times, the 49km, largely coastal route links Westport, Newport, Mulranny and Achill. A pedal or ebike ride, or a stroll along a section of the greenway is the perfect way to spend the day before returning to the dark sky park for the festival’s evening events.

While Mayo Dark Sky Park offers the best chance of seeing stars with the naked eye, The Wild Atlantic Way has many other areas of low light pollution and was named by Lonely Planet as one of the top five places in the world to star gaze. Festival goers who want to extend their stay in the area will find many stunning locations where the night-time skies put on a dazzling show. Among these is Achill Island, one of the most beautiful places in the County Mayo landscape. Home to the multi-award-winning Keem Strand, the island is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts with its soaring sea-cliffs, golden beaches and inland lakes. Ideal for watersports, hiking, cycling, fishing or just relaxing in a beach sauna or seaweed bath, Achill has something to suit every level of energy with majestic views and starry nights thrown in for free.

And at Downpatrick Head on County Mayo’s northern coastline, the striking and much photographed Dún Briste sea stack is a beautiful place to watch the sun go down and the stars appear. One of many sites on the island associated with St Patrick, legend has it that when a pagan chieftain refused to convert to Christianity, St Patrick struck the ground with his crozier, splitting a chunk of the headland off into the ocean, and stranding the chieftain on top.

For stargazers, nature lovers and those seeking an autumn escape to a place of wild beauty, County Mayo ticks all the boxes – spectacular night skies, breath-taking scenery, a unique astronomy festival and endless outdoor adventures.
