Journey into contemporary art at Dublin Gallery Weekend

A weekend of free events celebrating Dublin’s vibrant contemporary art scene opens up a world of visual wonders to everyone.

Dublin Gallery Weekend 2023

Dublin Gallery Weekend (8–10 November) presents a special programme of exhibitions and events, including artists’ talks, guided tours, performances, demonstrations and discussions, in Dublin’s top galleries.

With free entry to exhibitions in 12 of the city’s art galleries, it offers an unmissable opportunity to see artwork that ranges from painting and sculpture to cutting-edge multidisciplinary creations.

The weekend’s central exhibition, Kites above the Castles, on show at Wilton Park, features work by contemporary artists from 11 participating Dublin Gallery Weekend galleries. These include Fergus Martin, Alan Butler, Siobhan Hapaska, David Eager Maher, Sasha Sykes, Ronnie Hughes, Corban Walker, Orla Whelan, Eoin Mac Lochlainn and Mary A. Fitzgerald.

Several new exhibitions open on 8 November to kick off the weekend’s events. At the Oliver Sears Gallery, an exhibition of new carvings by Jason Ellis, one of Ireland’s foremost sculptors in stone, memorialises extinct animals in Monkey Gone to Heaven.

Cian McLoughlin’s Zero is an Even Number at the Molesworth looks at the intersection of neuroscience and art, while Eithne Jordan launches Still, a look at the histories of public buildings through art.

There are a number of guided tours over the weekend that visit three or four galleries and give an insight into the works on display. These include special tours for children and families.

Artist’s talks and in-conversation events present a chance to get inside the mind of the artists and their creative process. Among these is a series of Get Personal talks in which Josephine Kelliher explores the work of Michale Kane, a central figure in the history of Irish Modernism, and Beatrice O’Connell and Patricia Burns reveal their artistic journey.

Sunday sees a variety of events with a relaxed feel including Sunday Social Club with brunch, bubbles and music, offering an informal environment in which to view Justin Fitzpatrick’s exhibition A Musical Instrument at the Kerlin Gallery. And at Taylore Galleries, Slow Sunday is a relaxed conversation over coffee and cake with renowned art historian Jessica Fahy.
