Explore the science of the universe at the NI Science Festival
Delve into the wonders of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics at one of Europe’s leading science festivals.
The NI Science Festival (15–25 February), the largest of its kind on the island of Ireland, turns 10 in 2024 and has lined up a mesmerising programme of over 180 events for science buffs of all ages.
Presented by top scientists and science communicators, the events include workshops, tours, talks and interactive activities. Complementing the daytime programme, the festival also features an eclectic mix of experiential evening events including scientific debate, talks, theatre, comedy, music and film.
Among the most anticipated events is a talk by Professor Alice Roberts, a biological anthropologist, author and broadcaster, entitled Crypt: Life, Death and Disease in the Middle Ages and Beyond. She will look at how ancient bones hold the key to understanding the impact of violence and disease in medieval society.
Marcus du Sautoy, one of the UK's leading scientists, will consider the link between maths and games in Around the World in 80 Games, which spans continents and millennia. And prominent wildlife presenter Gordon Buchanan will take a look back over his 30 Years in The Wild.
Child-friendly events will cover a wide range of topics from the science of Jurassic Park to the wonders of tiny creatures and the technology behind green gadgets.
And in Bakineering in Space, aerospace engineer Andrew Smyth will explore the surprising connections between everyday bakes and the extraordinary engineering that helps keep astronauts alive.
Adult-only events will include a recording of the unique Blindboy podcast, an award-winning, storytelling podcast in the Irish tradition of the seanchaí which intertwines history, fiction, cultural critique and politics. Blindboy will speak to two special guest scientists, offering the audience a unique and humorous insight into issues the scientists are currently researching.
There’s also the chance to unravel the mystery of love at Dr Anna Machin’s talk on the neuroscience of attraction or discover the perfect (science-based) pairing between craft drinks and award-winning local cheeses at Seven Drinks for Seven Cheeses.
The objective of the NI Science Festival is to make science accessible to everyone. Events will take place across the region, from Belfast to the walled city of Derry~Londonderry, offering the chance to combine festival fun with exploring Northern Ireland’s towns and cities.
