Stay a day longer on the island of Ireland

The island of Ireland’s compact size means that it’s easy to explore. So next time you’re on a city break there, be sure to add an extra day to discover the great destinations that lie beyond the city limits.

After a few days in Dublin, take a day trip to delve into Ireland’s Ancient East.

Go north to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Brú na Bóinne and visit the fascinating Neolithic tombs of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth that are older than the pyramids. Continue your journey through time at the Hill of Tara, Ireland’s most sacred space, and at the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre, which recounts the island’s most famous battle.

Blend history with whiskey on a tour of Slane Castle and Distillery, spend an afternoon at Listoke Gin School, or enjoy a hands-on farm experience at Causey Farm.

Heading south from Dublin you can easily reach gorgeous Glendalough, the site of a sixth-century monastery and a beautiful place to walk.

Further south you can explore Ireland’s Copper Coast, a UNESCO Global Geopark, while medieval Kilkenny is also within easy reach.

If your city break is in Belfast, don’t miss the chance to take a drive up the spectacular Causeway Coast and include a stop at the magnificent Giant’s Causeway.

Fans of Game of Thrones can immerse themselves in “Westeros” with a tour of shoot locations in counties Antrim and Down and a visit to the world’s only official Game of Thrones® Studio Tour.

A trip west will take you to the serene Fermanagh Lakelands, where you can take a cruise to ancient islands.

Or for the ultimate leg stretch head for the wild Sperrin Mountains or the majestic Mournes and spend a day hiking in beautiful surrounds.

From Cork and Galway you can easily explore wonderful attractions along the Wild Atlantic Way.

It’s a short trip from Cork city to the stunning Old Head of Kinsale where you can visit the famous striped lighthouse. Or take a walk on the golden expanse of Inchydoney beach and breathe in the freshest sea air.

Similarly, lots of great destinations lie within a relatively short distance of Galway city.

They include the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, one of the island’s most popular attractions. You can also do a day trip to Kylemore Abbey, a striking neo-Gothic manor said to be Ireland’s most romantic building.

And you really can’t visit Galway without experiencing the wild and craggy magic of Connemara. Take a trip to Connemara National Park for a hike or ramble through this remarkable landscape.
