Out of this World Stargazing in Ireland
Ireland’s naturally dark skies offer wonderful opportunities to view twinkling constellations with the naked eye. The recent spike in public interest in space — fuelled by major US missions — makes this connection to the cosmos feel more timely than ever.
Large areas of rural and coastal Ireland have some of the clearest, darkest skies in Europe, creating ideal conditions for spotting stars, planets, meteor showers and the Milky Way. Its northerly position also means that during periods of strong solar activity, lucky stargazers might even glimpse the Northern Lights along the northern and north‑western coasts. These natural advantages have inspired a growing range of night‑time experiences, from guided stargazing and astronomy workshops to events exploring the links between the stars and Irish mythology.

Star Gazing the Glen - Kerry Dark Sky Reserve
Here are some of the standout experiences shaping Ireland’s after‑dark appeal.
Mayo Dark Sky Park on the Wild Atlantic Way is one of the best places in the world to stargaze. Awarded International Dark Sky Place of the Year in 2024, the park sits between the ocean and the beautiful Nephin Mountains. Marking its tenth anniversary this year, the annual autumn Dark Sky Festival (30 October–1 November) brings together astronomy, arts, culture and biodiversity in a flagship programme of family events across Newport, Mulranny and Ballycroy. With a series of guided stargazing sessions, talks from experts, planetarium shows, and walking tours, the festival is a must-do for astronomy buffs.
2. Armagh Observatory & Planetarium
Historic Armagh city is the home of Armagh Observatory & Planetarium, an internationally renowned centre for astronomical research and education. In the Observatory you can take a tour of the centre’s legendary telescopes and hear about its 200-year history. The Planetarium has a 360o digital theatre where it presents dazzling dome shows that provide expert-led interpretation of the constellations and space missions. An interactive indoor exhibition area and an outdoor Astropark with a scale model of the Universe ensure there is plenty to enjoy on a visit.

Loughcrew Megalithic Cemetery
3. Loughcrew Megalithic Cemetery
Across the island of Ireland there are many Stone Age monuments that have links to the stars. In County Meath, the 5000-year-old Loughcrew Megalithic Cemetery is one such space. The cemetery is a group of Neolithic passage tombs, at least two of which were built to align with sunrise at the spring and autumn equinoxes. To discover the fascinating history of the site, also known as the Hills of the Witch, learn of its astronomical importance and for a chance to see the ancient art still visible inside the cairns, you can join a guided tour at Loughcrew Megalithic Centre.
4. Birr Castle Demesne & Historic Science Centre
The Great Leviathan Telescope at Birr Castle in County Offaly is one of Ireland’s most iconic astronomy heritage objects. The towering 22‑metre‑tall structure, built in the early 1840s, held the title of the world’s largest telescope for some 75 years. Today, the telescope sits in the heart of the picturesque Birr Castle Demesne, an imposing reminder of the ingenuity of its creator, William Parsons, whose family still live in Birr Castle. The seven-gallery Historic Science Centre in the grounds of the castle gives more insight into the family’s involvement in early photography, engineering, and astronomy. Guided tours of the castle interior are available May to September.
Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve is the setting for guided tours run by Kerry Dark Sky Tourism.
Under the pristine night-time skies of this gold-tier reserve you will be introduced to the best-known constellations in the northern hemisphere using a fun and intuitive ‘star hopping’ technique. On the AfterDark Archaeology tour, you will be guided to prehistoric sites where ancient carvings can still be seen. By dark the atmosphere at these sites is extraordinary and the guide will explain the mythology surrounding the sites and their links with the stars. Magical full moon tours are also available.
