Tourism Ireland in Canada has teamed up with The Weather Network, to spread the message that the island of Ireland is the true ‘Home of Halloween’. Some 7.6 million people across Canada will be tuning in to a number of special Halloween broadcasts later today (30 October), to find out all about our Halloween traditions. Millions more will be watching on social media.
Viewers will see The Weather Network’s presenter Rachel Schoutsen share a personal story about Ireland and our barmbrack. Rachel visited Ireland for Halloween back in 2017 and found a ring in a slice of barmbrack; her fortune subsequently came true, as she got engaged within one year!
The broadcasts also include interviews with Aidan Quigley, the owner of Ireland’s allegedly most haunted house, Loftus Hall; as well as storytellers Liz Weir and Lorraine O'Dwyer, who will tell viewers about the origins of some of our Halloween traditions, legends and tales. Viewers will also enjoy a barmbrack cookery demo with Belfast chef Stephen Jeffers and a Halloween cocktail demo with mixologist Oisín Davis.
Sandra Moffatt, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Canada, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to team up with The Weather Network to celebrate the island of Ireland’s connection with Halloween. Today’s TV broadcasts – which will be seen by around 7.6 million Canadians – are a fun way of shining a spotlight on the island of Ireland and spreading the message that Ireland is the true ‘Home of Halloween’. Tourism Ireland wants to ensure that the island of Ireland is right at the top of Canadian travellers’ ‘wish-lists’, when the time is right for them to travel here again.”
