Our world-class golf was highlighted over the weekend at Rhein Golf in Düsseldorf, Europe’s largest exhibition for golf travel and equipment which attracts more than 17,500 golf professionals and enthusiasts. The promotion was supported by Tourism Ireland, Fáilte Ireland and Tourism NI.
Germany is the third-largest market for tourism to the island of Ireland and in 2017 we welcomed around 660,000 German visitors.

said Zoë Redmond, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Central Europe. “Overall, business sentiment at the show was really positive, with strong interest in Ireland for golf holidays and advance bookings looking good. Golf is the world’s largest sports-related travel market and Tourism Ireland is working hard to drive home the message that a golfing holiday in Ireland is about much more than a round of 18 holes – the combination of our world-class golf and our unique brand of hospitality plays a key role in attracting German golfers to visit.”
As well as attending Rhein Golf, Tourism Ireland’s golf promotional programme this year will include familiarisation trips to Ireland for German travel trade and journalists, as well as advertising (both online and offline). The organisation will highlight the world-class golf on offer right around the island of Ireland and, in particular, the 2018 Irish Open at Ballyliffin and The Open in 2019 at Royal Portrush.
Tourism Ireland recently unveiled a new strategy for Germany, setting out challenging and ambitious targets which will see the island of Ireland welcome 800,000 German visitors per year by 2021, representing growth of +20%; and will see revenue generated by holiday visitors increase by +27%, to €375 million per year.
Zoë Redmond continued: “Germany has performed extremely well for tourism to the island of Ireland in recent years and the future is undoubtedly bright. In fact, 2017 was the seventh consecutive year of growth for German visitor numbers to the island of Ireland, when we welcomed around 660,000 German visitors. We believe that this is a market of considerable potential for Irish tourism over the coming years.”
