Tourism Ireland wins “best stand feature” at world’s largest travel fair

Tourism Ireland has taken the award for “best stand feature” at World Travel Market (WTM) in London, the largest global event for the travel and tourism industry. The award was announced today, for the giant Finn McCool on the Tourism Ireland stand. The giant is perched on some replica Giant’s Causeway stones, providing a fun “selfie” opportunity for visitors to the show.

Today (Tuesday, 7 November) is day two of World Travel Market, with about 51,500 travel professionals from 182 countries and regions around the world and over 3,000 international media in attendance. This year, some 70 tourism enterprises from the island of Ireland – including hotels, ferry companies, visitor attractions, coach hire companies, incoming tour operators, activity providers, and hostels – are exhibiting at the Tourism Ireland stand, networking, negotiating and exchanging vital contracts for 2018.  According to the organisers of WTM, almost £3 billion’s (about €3.4 billion’s) worth of business was done at last year’s WTM.

With about 182 countries and regions all vying for business at WTM, Tourism Ireland aims to stand out from the crowd and capture the attention of the global media and travel professionals in attendance.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “The large representation of tourism companies from Ireland at WTM this week is extremely welcome and essential in the highly competitive global marketplace. We are delighted that our busy stand proved eye-catching for the judges and was singled out for this accolade.  Our aim is to capture the attention of the influential travel trade and media from around the world attending WTM this week, to convey the message to the world that there has never been a better time to visit the island of Ireland. The award is good news indeed as we kick off our marketing drive to grow overseas visitor numbers in 2018.”

David Wood and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, both Tourism Ireland, accept the award for “best stand feature” from Jonathan Hull, World Travel Market (right).
