470,000+ Swedes read about Co Clare and the Burren Smokehouse

An article showcasing the Burren Smokehouse in Lisdoonvarna and its Swedish owner, Birgitta Curtin, appeared in a recent edition of Göteborgs-Posten newspaper in Sweden, profiling the award-winning smokehouse to more than 470,000 readers – or potential Swedish holidaymakers for Co Clare and the West of Ireland.

Göteborgs-Posten is a major daily newspaper published in Gothenburg, with about 472,000 readers. Tourism Ireland in the Nordic Region, in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, invited journalist Anna Rehnberg to visit Ireland last October, to interview and profile three Swedes living in Ireland – including successful businessman Lars Pettersson, Sofie Skehan Larsson (married to chef Donal Skehan) and Birgitta Curtin (owner of the Burren Smokehouse).

The article about the Burren Smokehouse and its Swedish owner appeared under the headline Birgitta blir vis på sin rökta lax (meaning “Birgitta gets wise on her smoked salmon” – a reference to the salmon of knowledge!). Birgitta described what made her fall for this part of Ireland: “Det var musiken, landskapet men framför allt människorna som bor här!” (which roughly translates as “It was the music, the scenery but especially the people living here!”).

Aileen Hickey, Tourism Ireland’s Manager for the Nordic Region, said: “We are delighted with the excellent exposure for the Burren Smokehouse in ‘Göteborgs-Posten’, which is an great way of highlighting the Burren to a large audience of potential holidaymakers in the west of Sweden. Publicity is an important element of our overall promotional programme, helping to raise awareness through the Swedish media of the many things to see and do on a holiday in Co Clare and elsewhere around the island of Ireland.”

Aileen Hickey continued: “2015 was an excellent year for visitor numbers to the island of Ireland from the Nordic Region, with the most recent CSO figures showing an increase of +33% for September to November. Tourism Ireland will roll out an extensive programme of promotional activity throughout 2016 – to keep the momentum going and build on that growth.”
