1+ million Canadians to tune in to Northern Ireland

Game of Thrones focus for popular Canadian TV programme

A Canadian TV crew has been filming in Northern Ireland this week for a popular entertainment show called InnerSpace. Invited here by Tourism Ireland in Toronto, the crew has been filming at various locations associated with Game of Thrones, in Co Down and along the Causeway Coastal Route. The InnerSpace programme filmed here will be broadcast in April – just before the launch of the brand new Game of Thrones series – and will be seen by more than 1 million viewers across Canada.

In Co Down, the crew visited places like Audley’s Castle (Robb Stark’s Camp), the Quoile River and Inch Abbey. They then travelled along the Causeway Coastal Route, stopping at several filming locations, including the caves at Cushendun, Ballintoy ‘Pyke’ Harbour, as well as at the Giant’s Causeway and Dunluce Castle. The crew’s itinerary was devised by Tourism NI.

Dana Welch, Tourism Ireland’s manager in Canada, said: “We were delighted to invite the InnerSpace crew to film in Northern Ireland this week. Game of Thrones has a massive global audience and our aim is to reach out to the show’s Canadian fanbase, spiking their curiosity about the landscapes and locations featured in the series and inspiring them to travel to Northern Ireland and explore them for themselves.

“TV and film are recognised as strong influencers on travellers everywhere, with up to 35% of people being impacted in their choice of destination by what they see on screen. Tourism Ireland regularly works with overseas TV and production companies to facilitate the making of travel and lifestyle programmes – to maximise the promotional opportunities of popular films and TV programmes filmed on location here and get positive exposure for Northern Ireland around the world.”

Canada is an important market for tourism to Northern Ireland; of all nationalities visiting the island of Ireland, Canadians have one of the highest propensities to visit Northern Ireland, with approximately one-third of all Canadian visitors to the island doing so.
