Chinese journalists have a ‘write’ time in Northern Ireland

730,000 Chinese to read about Game of Thrones and the Causeway Coastal Route

Four Chinese journalists have been visiting Northern Ireland this week, as guests of Tourism Ireland. 

The group includes a blogger, a travel photographer whose work has appeared in National Geographic and Lonely Planet, as well as two magazine journalists – who have a combined readership of more than 730,000 people in China. They are here to experience at first-hand some of the many things to see and do in Northern Ireland for features stories they will write when they return home. 

The journalists’ itinerary – designed by Tourism NI – included visits to Mussenden Temple, Dunluce Castle and the Giant’s Causeway with a lunch stop at Harry’s Shack on Portstewart Strand. The journalists also checked out several Game of Thrones film locations along the Causeway Coastal Route including Ballintoy Harbour, and Larrybane Quarry near Carrick-a-rede rope bridge. In addition, the group had the opportunity to experience Northern Ireland’s newest tourist attraction – The Gobbins Coastal Path at Islandmagee, before travelling onto Belfast where they enjoyed a cycle tour around the city and a visit to Titanic Belfast. 

A key element of Tourism Ireland’s promotional activity in China, to grow our share of this rapidly-growing tourism market, involves working with the media to generate positive publicity for Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland. Amanda Burns, Tourism Ireland’s manager for Asia, said: “China is an important emerging travel market and one that Tourism Ireland is committed to growing over the coming years. Working with journalists is a key element of our annual promotional programme in China. The aim of this fact-finding visit is to increase awareness of the island of Ireland, to help secure a greater share of the four million Chinese visitors who travel to Europe each year. Tourism Ireland aims to grow the number of Chinese visitors to the island of Ireland to 50,000 per year, by 2017.” 

Tourism Ireland has offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu.
