‘Teeing up’ Ireland at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston

Spotlight on Irish golf holidays in the US

Golf in Ireland was in the spotlight over the weekend, at the Deutsche Bank Championship 2015, which took place at the TPC Boston golf club in Norton, Massachusetts.

Tourism Ireland – together with a number of Irish and American golf partners – had a presence at the high profile tournament, in a bid to boost golf holidaymaker numbers from the United States to Ireland. Partners included North and West Coast Links, South West Ireland Golf, Carr Golf Travel, as well as Fairways to Heaven Golf, a Florida-based tour operator.

Golf is a major focus for Tourism Ireland in the US and the organisation has a busy programme of promotions under way throughout 2015. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s head of North America, said: “The island of Ireland boasts some outstanding golf courses and our presence at the Deutsche Bank Championship was another excellent opportunity for Tourism Ireland, together with our partners, to showcase that superb golf offering to thousands of American golf enthusiasts. We have an extensive promotional programme under way in the US, and in other key markets around the world, to encourage more people to consider golfing holidays on the island of Ireland.”

The United States is an extremely important market for tourism to the island of Ireland and 2015 looks set to be another record year, with the most recent CSO figures showing growth of +15% in visitors from North America for January to July, almost 111,000 extra visitors compared with the same seven-month period in 2014. Tourism Ireland is determined to ensure that growth continues and the organisation has an extensive programme of promotions under way in the US throughout 2015. Ireland now welcomes 10% of all American visitors to Europe – particularly noteworthy given the intense competition from other destinations.
