A three-page article in a major Spanish newspaper showcasing Northern Ireland and its Game of Thrones
connections hit the newsstands across Spain this week, profiling the destination to more than 900,000 readers – or potential holidaymakers for Northern Ireland.
is one of Spain’s largest daily newspapers, with about 906,000 readers, and Tourism Ireland in Madrid invited journalist Carlos Fresneda to visit Northern Ireland earlier this month. The resulting article appeared under the headline “Viaje por el Reino de Poniente”
(meaning “travel through the kingdom of Westeros), with lots of great images and an explanatory map of the various locations in Northern Ireland which feature in the hit TV series.
The article also appeared in the online version of El Mundo
and included a great short film presented by the journalist, featuring places like Mussenden Temple, the Dark Hedges, Ballintoy and Tollymore Forest Park. To view, click here
Barbara Wood, Tourism Ireland’s manager for Spain, said: “We are delighted with the extensive coverage in El Mundo, which is an excellent way of showcasing Northern Ireland and its associations with Game of Thrones to a large audience of potential holidaymakers. Publicity is an important element of our overall promotional programme, helping to raise awareness through the Spanish media of the many things to see and do on a holiday in Northern Ireland.”
Earlier this year, Tourism Ireland undertook an extensive social media campaign to highlight Northern Ireland – through the exciting events of Game of Thrones – on the global stage. The campaign was created to reach out to the show’s global fanbase, bringing Northern Ireland to the attention of Game of Thrones
fans worldwide in a fun and innovative way.
Barbara Wood continued: “Latest NISRA figures indicate that we welcomed an additional +8% visitors from Mainland Europe to Northern Ireland in the first quarter of 2015. Tourism Ireland is determined to ensure that growth continues and we have an extensive programme of promotions under way in Spain throughout 2015. As well as highlighting Northern Ireland’s Game of Thrones connections, we are also promoting the Causeway Coastal Route and new visitor experiences like the refurbished Mount Stewart. And we continue to highlight iconic attractions such as Titanic Belfast, as well as festivals and events like the Tall Ships in Belfast.”
