Tourism Minister Paschal Donohoe travels to Boston to promote Ireland in the all-important United States market

Sales blitz in Chicago and Boston this week to boost American tourist numbers

Tourism Ireland and a delegation of 14 tourism companies from the island of Ireland undertook a two-city trade and media blitz in the United States this week. The ‘Jump into Ireland’ (JITI) events took in the key cities of Chicago and Boston, with Tourism Minister Paschal Donohoe joining the delegation in Boston.

The busy schedule included a B2B event in each city, showcasing the island of Ireland via a 60-minute travel TV show format – providing an excellent opportunity for the participating Irish tourism enterprises to promote and sell their product to leading travel agents. Each event also included an opportunity for networking with influential travel and lifestyle media.

Tourism Ireland is also sponsoring the travel showcase at this weekend’s iFest in Boston, a brand new Irish festival and showcase of contemporary Irish culture, entertainment and innovation. It will feature spectacular dance showcases with Riverdance performers and a line-up which includes Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains.

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD, said: “Tourism Ireland’s Jump in to Ireland sales event, which is taking place in Chicago and Boston this week, targets hundreds of travel agents in both cities. It showcases the regions of Ireland and provides an excellent opportunity for the Irish tourism enterprises, who are travelling to the US, to network, build relationships and promote their product there. With roughly 100 travel agents and as many as 45 US journalists expected at JITI in Boston, the potential to sell Ireland, and to reach into the homes of tens of millions of Americans, is unparalleled.”

Niall Gibbons, Tourism Ireland’s CEO, said: “The United States is one of the most important markets for tourism to the island of Ireland. 2014 is set to be another record year for tourism from North America, with growth of +11% already recorded for the first seven months of this year. Tourism Ireland is working hard to keep that momentum going throughout 2014. Our ‘Jump into Ireland’ sales blitz to Chicago and Boston this week and our sponsorship of the travel showcase at iFest in Boston provide excellent platforms to spread the word about the many great things to see and do right around the island of Ireland.”

Tourism Ireland’s ‘Jump into Ireland’ (JITI) series of sales blitzes for 2014 has already taken in Atlanta (Georgia), Sarasota and Boca Raton (Florida), as well as Fort Worth, Houston and Austin (Texas). The programme concludes in November, taking in the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.
