More than one million Scandinavian golfers – and potential holidaymakers for Ireland – are set to read all about golf in Ireland, following the visit of 11 top golf and travel writers from Denmark and Sweden last weekend, as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland.
Representing a variety of online and print publications with a combined readership of more than one million golf enthusiasts, the journalists were here to sample our world-class golf, for feature stories they are writing about golf holidays in Ireland. During their whistle-stop visit, they played Royal Dublin and County Louth Golf Club at Baltray, when the Danes took on their Swedish counterparts in their very own Nordic Open! They also visited Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links and met with Danish golf course architect, Philip Spogárd.
Aileen Hickey, Tourism Ireland’s manager in the Nordic Region, said: “We were delighted to invite this group of journalists to Ireland, so they could sample our world-class golf. Fact-finding visits like this are a very important element of Tourism Ireland’s overall promotional effort; they are a really effective way for us to get positive exposure for Ireland through the media in Denmark and Sweden. The publicity value of the articles these journalists will produce when they return home is fantastic – they will reach over one million prospective golf holidaymakers in the two countries.
“Golf is the world’s largest sports-related travel market and Tourism Ireland is working hard to promote the island of Ireland as a ‘must see’ and ‘must play’ destination to golf enthusiasts. Our message is that Ireland offers golfers the complete package – with top courses, stunning scenery and the warmest of welcomes.”
This year’s Irish Open at Fota Island Resort is being used as a ‘hook’ to highlight our world-class golf. Tourism Ireland is urging golfers in Denmark and Sweden to come and attend the Irish Open and then to extend their trip and try out some of our fantastic courses for themselves.
