Ireland is all ‘tee’d up’ for golf tourism from Britain

Highlighting the Irish Open at Fota Island Resort to top GB golf writers

Tourism Ireland in Britain kicked off the 2014 golf season this week, with a special media golf day at the top Hertfordshire golf course of Brocket Hall.

Twenty-four leading British golf writers – representing major titles like The Independent, The Times, Daily Mirror, Today’s Golfer and Golf International – attended the event, which was organised by Tourism Ireland to highlight our world-class golf, this year’s Irish Open at Fota Island Resort in June, as well as links golf along the Wild Atlantic Way and the Causeway Coastal Route. Two of the top golf tour operators in Britain also attended.

Golf holidays in Ireland are a major focus for Tourism Ireland in Britain, and in other key markets around the world, and the organisation has a busy programme of promotions under way to grow the number of golf tourists in 2014 and beyond. David Boyce, Tourism Ireland head of sports tourism, said: “Our golf media day was an excellent platform to highlight our world-class golf to some of the most influential golf journalists in Britain. Tourism Ireland has a busy promotional programme under way, to encourage more Britons to consider a golfing holiday in Ireland. We are highlighting the fact that we have some of the very best golf in the world, emphasising ease of access and the value of a golf holiday in Ireland.”

Tourism Ireland’s promotions in Britain are highlighting the Irish Open, which takes place at Fota Island Resort in June, as well as some of the many local competitions taking place this year on courses right around the island. Other promotional activity includes TV, press and online advertising in conjunction with top online golf tour operators; a presence at events like the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, in May; and e-newsletters to a database of more than 10,000 golfers around Britain. Tourism Ireland will also invite top golf journalists to visit the island of Ireland throughout 2014 – in particular to attend, and then highlight, some of the local competitions taking place between April and June.
