5 million Austrians to read about Ireland

Six top travel writers from Austria are visiting Ireland this week, as guests of Tourism Ireland. Representing various travel and lifestyle publications, with a combined readership of more than five million people around Austria, the journalists are here to experience some of the many things to see and do in Ireland – and, in turn, to inspire their readers to come and experience the destination for themselves.

The first stop on the group’s itinerary – designed by Fáilte Ireland – was the National Stud in Kildare. Then it was on to Limerick, where they took in the Hunt Museum and King John’s Castle; followed by a visit to the Flying Boat Museum in Foynes. In Kerry, they enjoyed a guided tour of the Blasket Centre and a boat trip with Dingle Dolphin Tours. They also met with some local food suppliers in Dingle and visited the Dingle Brewing Company and Dingle Distillery. Tomorrow (5 June), they travel on to Killarney and will visit Muckross Traditional Farms. They will also visit Carlow, to do a foraging walk of the Blackstairs Mountains and the River Barrow area in Killedmond, with Mary White of Blackstairs Eco Trails.

Zoë Redmond, Tourism Ireland’s manager for Central Europe, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to invite this group of influential Austrian journalists to Ireland, to experience some of the many things to see and do here on holiday. Fact-finding visits like this are an important element of Tourism Ireland’s overall promotional effort; they are a really effective way for us to get positive exposure for the island of Ireland through the media in Austria. The publicity value of the articles these journalists will write when they return home is fantastic – they will be read by more than five million potential holidaymakers in Austria, encouraging them to come here and experience the destination for themselves.”

Tourism Ireland undertakes a busy publicity programme around the world each year to raise the profile of the island of Ireland – and media visits are a key element of that programme. In 2013, there were over 1,500 media visits to the island of Ireland, which helped to generate articles and broadcasts around the globe worth more than €80 million in equivalent advertising value.
