Highlighting Northern Ireland and Giro routes to influential sports journalists in London
Some of the top cycling and sports journalists in Great Britain attended a special Giro d’Italia ‘Meet the Media’ event in London, organised by Tourism Ireland. The event was attended by big media names like Sky Sports, Eurosport and ITV Sport.
Guests heard Northern Ireland TV presenter – and host of ITV4’s The Cycle Show – Graham Little give an overview of the Grande Partenza in Northern Ireland next May and the cycle routes which will take in Belfast, the Causeway Coast and Armagh; this was followed by a question-and-answer session with Irish cycling champion David McCann. Tourism Ireland also invited the various influential journalists in attendance to come and visit Northern Ireland and cycle the Grande Partenza routes – so that they can then share their experiences with their readers and viewers.
Over the coming months, Tourism Ireland will be pulling out all the stops to maximise the tourism potential of the “Grande Partenza” of next year’s Giro d’Italia, the world’s second-biggest cycling race. Vanessa Markey, Tourism Ireland’s head of Great Britain, said: “It is a wonderful coup for Northern Ireland that the first stages of the Giro d’Italia will take place here in 2014. There is huge interest in this prestigious event, which will be seen by an estimated 775 million sports and cycling fans everywhere, presenting us with a fantastic opportunity to showcase Northern Ireland in GB, and elsewhere around the world, as a top location for sporting events, as well as a wonderful holiday destination. Tourism Ireland is rolling out a busy programme of promotions in key markets where there is strong interest in cycling, including GB, Italy, Germany and Spain.”
