Renowned travel writers’ conference comes to Cork

The tourism drive in the all-important US market continues this week, as top American travel writers arrive in Cork, to take part in this year’s renowned Travel Classics writers’ conference. The conference will bring huge exposure of what Ireland has to offer American holidaymakers, through the media in our second-largest tourism market.

The conference, which takes place this weekend at Ballymaloe House in Shanagarry, brings together celebrated editors from a wide range of high profile publications – including Condé Nast Traveler, National Geographic Traveler, Harper’s Bazaar, AFAR, Saveur and Coastal Living – all of which reach hundreds of thousands of readers across North America, as well as globally. The keynote speaker at the conference is Kevin Doyle, deputy editor of Condé Nast Traveler.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “We are delighted to welcome some of the most influential and prominent American travel and lifestyle journalists to Ireland, to show them at first-hand what makes the island of Ireland unique. We are particularly pleased that they have chosen to host their 2013 conference here, as we celebrate this special year of The Gathering. Tourism Ireland has a busy programme of promotions under way in the United States to highlight The Gathering; we are actively reaching out to the Irish Diaspora, inviting them to come home and visit Ireland this year.

“2012 was one of the strongest years for visitors from the US to Ireland; and given that the latest tourism figures from the CSO, for the period January-March 2013, showed the best-ever first quarter performance from North America since 2004, we are optimistic that 2013 will be the best year ever – when we hope to welcome over one million American visitors, spending about US$1 billion.”

This is the 20th year of the Travel Classics writers’ conference – regarded by many as the world’s foremost networking event for travel writers and editors. It takes place over four days, during which numerous US freelance travel writers have the opportunity to hold individual meetings with assigning editors from the top travel, epicurean and lifestyle publications in the US.

As well as enjoying all that Co Cork has to offer, delegates also have an opportunity to visit other parts of the island, including counties Clare, Kerry, Waterford, Laois, Roscommon, Sligo, Donegal, Monaghan, Meath and Dublin. Arranged in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, the conference, and the pre- and post-conference trips, will give the delegates a fantastic opportunity to collect many interesting stories, inspiring numerous new works and articles and leading to huge exposure in the top-tier travel and lifestyle publications around the US.
