'Snap happy’ in Belfast

Showcasing Belfast and Northern Ireland to prospective visitors through Instagram

Popular ‘Instagramer’ Naomi Atkinson, based in GB, was invited to Northern Ireland by Tourism Ireland in London, to capture lots of great photos and share them on Instagram, to highlight some of the many things to see and do here to prospective holidaymakers across GB. Instagram is a photo-sharing social network and mobile app – which allows users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them and then share them on Instagram or on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.

Armed with her smartphone and her camera, and following an itinerary devised by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, Naomi spent time at St George’s Market in Belfast. Then it was on to Londonderry, where she captured lots of great images of the city during a walk along the historic walls and a visit to the Tower Museum. She also took lots of pictures of the Peace Bridge Race – a point-to-point race for sailing dinghies on the River Foyle – before following the Causeway Coastal Route back to Belfast, stopping off at various points along the way to photograph the spectacular scenery.

Vanessa Markey, Tourism Ireland’s head of Great Britain, said: “With more than 167,000 followers, Naomi is one the most popular Instagramers in GB and we are delighted she agreed to travel to Northern Ireland, providing her followers with real-time visual images of what a great place it is for a holiday. Social media is a hugely important element of our promotional programme and Tourism Ireland has been working hard to maximise the impact of social media, to highlight Northern Ireland and inspire potential holidaymakers around Great Britain to come and visit.”

Naomi’s images can be seen on and on Tourism Ireland’s Facebook page and Twitter stream in GB.
