Mayor Campbell welcomes Tourism Ireland to the Walled City

The City Hotel in Londonderry was the venue for the September board meeting of Tourism Ireland. The Mayor, Councillor Kevin Campbell, was on hand to welcome the board members to the city and to thank the organisation for its support in promoting the area – and, in particular, Derry~Londonderry UK City of Culture 2013, through its busy programme of marketing activity across the globe. The board members also took the opportunity when they were in the city to meet with some tourism operators based in the North West, to discuss activity for the remainder of 2012 and 2013.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “2012 has been a wonderful year for Northern Ireland. The superb programme of new attractions, events and historic anniversaries taking place this year, and indeed in 2013, is being promoted by Tourism Ireland in 22 markets overseas to stimulate interest in Northern Ireland for holidays and short breaks. Right now, we are rolling out an extensive promotional programme to highlight festivals, events and the world-class tourism product here in Derry and across Northern Ireland. While this year we highlighted Titanic Belfast, the opening of the new Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre and the Clipper Homecoming Festival, next year the Derry~Londonderry UK City of Culture programme will feature strongly, as well as the World Police and Fire Games in September. Our ni2012 promotions have reached over 100 million people – or potential holidaymakers – so far this year. Our message is that there has never been a better time to visit the walled city and Northern Ireland.”
