Tourism Ireland Says Hi to Derry~Londonderry Clipper in New York

With the excitement building in the run-up to the arrival of the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race in Derry at the end of this month, a delegation from Derry~Londonderry UK City of Culture 2013 travelled to the U.S. for the most recent stopover of the race, in New York.

The City of Culture delegation took the opportunity to promote the city and outline some of the exciting plans for 2013 at an event attended by key travel and business contacts from New York. The crew of the Derry~Londonderry Clipper, led by skipper Mark Light, was also in attendance.

Welcoming the City of Culture delegation and the Clipper team to New York, Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s vice president of marketing in the US, said: “The Clipper Round the World Race is a great platform to put Londonderry and Northern Ireland in the spotlight – helping to showcase what the city has to offer as a wonderful holiday destination. The stopover of the race in New York is also a wonderful opportunity to highlight the inaugural UK City of Culture in 2013. Tourism Ireland will undertake a number of promotions here in the US, and in other markets around the world, to highlight Derry~Londonderry UK City of Culture over the coming months. It is a huge opportunity for the city to showcase what we have to offer in terms of culture, business and the corporate world.”

“There is already so much happening in the city in the run-up to 2013, with the ‘Peace One Day’ concert with Jude Law on 21st June, followed by the Clipper Maritime Festival in July, which will be a spectacular sight for all to see along the banks of the Foyle. We are working hard to highlight Derry and Northern Ireland, encouraging our friends from New York and beyond to make the trip to Northern Ireland and join in the fun and celebration.”
