‘Hole in One’ for Donegal as top US golf journalists pay a visit

Co Donegal and three of its finest golf courses played host to a group of influential golf journalists from the US last week – including representatives of Golf Digest magazine and Chicago Golf TV. The journalists were here, as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, to experience at first hand the fantastic golf on offer in this part of Ireland for golf programmes and travel stories they are researching about golf holidays here.

During their time in Donegal, the journalists enjoyed a round of golf on Sandy Hills links in Rosapenna, Donegal links at Murvagh and the Glashedy links at Ballyliffin. They stayed at the Rosapenna Hotel and Golf Resort in Downings and at the Redcastle Hotel in Moville.

Golf is a major focus for Tourism Ireland in the United States, and in other markets around the world, and the organisation has a busy schedule of promotions in place to grow the number of golf visitors in 2012 and beyond. Golf is the world’s largest sports-related travel market and, using the headline ‘Golf in Ireland – Time to Play’, Tourism Ireland is working hard to drive home the message that a golfing holiday here is about much more than a round of 18 holes – the combination of Ireland’s world-class golf and our unique brand of hospitality plays a key role in attracting golfers to come here.

Joe Byrne, Tourism Ireland’s head of North America, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to bring this group of journalists to Donegal and to Ireland, so they could experience for themselves the superb golf on offer here. They were really impressed by the courses they played, the wonderful scenery and the friendliness of the people they met. The US golf market remains a priority for Tourism Ireland in 2012 and we have a busy promotional programme under way this year to encourage more people to consider a golfing holiday here, which includes capitalising on the success of our major golf champions as ambassadors for the island of Ireland. We are working hard to drive home the message that the island of Ireland offers golfers the complete package – with top courses, stunning scenery and the warmest of welcomes.”

During their time in Ireland, the journalists also had a chance to attend the Irish Open at Royal Portrush.
