‘Hooking’ tourists for Ireland in Germany

A number of angling and tourism partners joined Tourism Ireland stand at the recent Angeln fishing fair in Duisburg in Germany.

Angeln is a specialist angling fair that takes place every year in Duisburg, in the Rhine/Ruhr region of western Germany. Focusing mainly on game, sea and pike angling, with a strong fly-fishing component, the fair attracts about 20,000 visitors, including travel agents and tour operators who specialise in angling holidays, as well as many thousands of fishing enthusiasts from the northern half of Germany and Dutch anglers (given the proximity of Duisburg to the Netherlands), all looking for ideas and suggestions for their next fishing break or holiday destination.

Kristina Gauges, Tourism Ireland Germany, said: “Germany is the largest outbound travel market in the world and the third-largest source of overseas visitors to the island of Ireland. We have an extensive promotional programme in the pipeline for 2012; fishing is just one of the activities we are promoting, highlighting Ireland as a fantastic fishing and holiday destination.”
