3 Million Americans to see images of Wicklow on popular TV show

Images of Co Wicklow will be beamed into the homes of about three million Americans later this year – courtesy of Tourism Ireland in New York and Fáilte Ireland. Footage was captured recently in Wicklow, and elsewhere in Ireland, for an Irish-themed episode of the popular current affairs TV programme World Report.

The crew from World Report was here to film scenes for an hour-long episode of the programme, which will air across the US on the HDNet television network. The programme will focus on a number of themes, including ‘The Gathering Ireland 2013’, our world-class golf and ni2012 and the extensive programme of events and historic anniversaries taking place in Northern Ireland this year. The show will also feature interviews with Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar and Tourism Ireland CEO Niall Gibbons.

During their time in Wicklow, the crew visited Mellon Farm, near Avoca, where they captured footage of local farmer Joe Mellon herding sheep. They also paid a visit to Avoca Handweavers, where they enjoyed a tour and a spot of lunch, and later stopped by Fitzgerald’s pub in Avoca, best known for its role in the BBC hit drama Ballykissangel, for a pint of Guinness.

Joe Byrne, Tourism Ireland’s head of North America, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to bring the World Report crew to Wicklow and Ireland. The publicity value of this programme is fantastic – it will be seen by about three million potential holidaymakers right across the US. It is an excellent way to raise awareness of Wicklow and Ireland and the wonderful tourism product on offer, encouraging more Americans to vacation in Ireland in 2012 and beyond.

“The United States is a tremendously important market for tourism to the island of Ireland and Tourism Ireland is working hard to keep the island of Ireland ‘top of mind’ with Americans. We are undertaking strong campaigns in the US, which are highlighting great value and urging consumers to ‘jump into Ireland’ and to include Ireland in their vacation plans for 2012. In our promotions, we promise potential visitors an experience that will be unique, full of engagement and great fun. With great access and attractive on-the-ground offers, we believe the island of Ireland is well positioned to deliver what an American holidaymaker wants.”
