China is the world’s largest outbound travel market and one of the fastest growing – with over 100 million Chinese travelling overseas in 2014, up from 10 million in 2000. The UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation) estimates that outbound travel from China will reach 200 million by 2020.
Visitors from China tend to stay longer and spend more than some other visitors. Tourism Ireland estimates that visitor numbers from China to the island of Ireland Chinese visitors to the island of Ireland grew by almost +10% to close to 40,000 in 2014. Further growth is anticipated for 2015 and early indications are positive.
We expect to welcome an estimated 50,000 visitors from China to the island of Ireland in 2017.
The new British-Irish Visa Scheme is making it easier for Chinese visitors to come here and to visit both Ireland and the UK, including Northern Ireland, on a single visa.
