Twelve travel agents from leading Spanish tour operator Catai visited Clonmacnoise last week, as part of a fact-finding trip to Co Offaly and the Lakelands region organised in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland.
The travel agents, who travelled with Aer Lingus from Madrid and Barcelona, enjoyed a guided tour of the ancient site at Clonmacnoise. They also visited and dined in Athlone before travelling on to Connemara.
Joanne Murphy, Tourism Ireland Spain, said: “We are delighted so many of these influential travel agents took time out of their busy schedules to visit Clonmacnoise and the Lakelands region. They were extremely impressed by our spectacular scenery, the wealth of historic attractions, as well as by the hospitality and friendliness of the people they met. Familiarisation visits such as these are extremely important as they help the travel agents to know exactly what we have to offer potential Spanish holidaymakers; the aim is that when they return to Spain they are better equipped to advise their clients on future travel plans and trip bookings.”
Spain is an important market for tourism to the island of Ireland and Tourism Ireland has an extensive promotional programme in place in Spain for 2010, highlighting the island of Ireland as a fantastic holiday destination.
