Local ‘Heroes’ to Star in Online Promotional Film

22 Apr 2010

Two outdoor enthusiasts from the North Coast will be doing their bit for tourism this year, by presenting a short film on the ‘hidden gems’ of the Causeway Coast and Glens on Tourism Ireland’s website.  Filming took place recently at various locations, for the film which goes live on Tourism Ireland’s website this weekend.

The film with Ricky Martin and John Bustard is one of a series of short online travelogues which have been shot this spring by Tourism Ireland and which will be viewed by hundreds of thousands of potential holidaymakers around the world.  The films will show off the characters and places around Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland that holidaymakers should meet and see.

In the film, the friends take the viewer on a journey around the coastline – highlighting the history and heritage of the area, as well as the huge variety of things to see and do here.  They begin their journey on the award-winning blue flag beach at the Whiterocks in Portrush where they test their skills at surfing and kayaking.  Other highlights include a round of golf at Castlerock; exploring Glenariff Forest Park; crossing the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge and visiting the Giant’s Causeway via the steam train which runs from Bushmills.  All this is set against the backdrop of the breathtaking scenery of the Causeway Coastal route.

A similar suite of films created by Tourism Ireland last year has already been viewed by over half a million potential visitors around the world.  The films have been translated into five European languages and posted on Yahoo!, YouTube, Facebook, WAYN and on Tourism Ireland’s suite of 41 websites, discoverireland.com.

Brian Twomey, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Marketing Communications, said: “This was a new approach for us in 2009 to engage potential holidaymakers around the world with the kind of real experience that a holiday here offers them.  It was a unique promotional tool and a first, as no other national tourist board had done this before.  It researched strongly and because the initiative worked so well for us last year, we are doing it all again in 2010.

“Allowing local characters like Ricky and John to showcase their favourite places gives a great feeling of authenticity for potential visitors, as well as providing them with that ‘inside track’ on great things to do and experience on the North Coast.  It is their sheer passion for their locality that makes these films resonate so well with potential visitors.”

The films are now live, in time for the busy promotional period overseas, and may be viewed on www.discoverireland.com/go
