Wallaby Captain Rocky Elsom Lends a Hand to Boost Tourism from ‘Down Under’

13 Nov 2009

Wallaby captain and former Leinster hero Rocky Elsom described his favourite holiday spots around Ireland, for an interview airing to over half a million fans this weekend on Australian channel Fox Sports News.

Tourism Ireland in Sydney arranged for Irish-born Fox Sports presenter Catherine Murphy to meet and interview Wallaby captain Rocky Elsom and hooker Stephen Moore, as well as Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll, here in Dublin in the run-up to this weekend’s clash between Ireland and Australia at Croke Park.  Each of the players described his favourite place for a holiday in Ireland; Rocky Elsom mentioned the beautiful scenery of the Dingle Peninsula, Stephen Moore enjoys horse racing at Fairyhouse and Brian O’Driscoll recommended a visit to the Guinness Storehouse.

The interviews are airing in Australia this weekend, in the run-up to and during the match.  With average viewership figures each weekend of about 550,000 Australians, these interviews on Fox Sports will be seen a huge audience of keen Australian rugby fans and potential holidaymakers for Ireland.  As well as the TV coverage, footage from the interviews can also be seen on the popular Fox Sports website as well as on all News Limited websites around Australia.

With huge exposure about the match and Ireland through the media in Australia this weekend, the interviews with these well-know rugby stars provide Tourism Ireland with a fantastic opportunity to highlight the island of Ireland as a wonderful holiday destination, as well as a top location for sporting events.  Orla Saul, Tourism Ireland Australia, said: “The match on Sunday is an excellent opportunity for us to raise the profile of Ireland in Australia.  A huge number of people across Australia will be tuning in to watch the match - so the interviews with these celebrity players endorsing Ireland as a fantastic holiday destination gives us an opportunity to really capitalise on that wonderful exposure.”
