Ireland has been voted “Wonderful Holiday Destination 2009” at a high profile awards ceremony in Shanghai.
Ireland fought off keen competition from other destinations nominated in this category – including South Africa, Abu Dhabi, Japan and the US.
The annual awards, the Modern Shanghai Reputation Awards, are organised by the Oriental Morning Post, a popular daily newspaper with a circulation of about 400,000 readers in Shanghai. The awards celebrate excellence in travel as well as in other areas such as fashion and the arts and the winners are voted for by readers of the newspaper.
Accepting the award, Susan Li, Tourism Ireland China: “We are absolutely delighted that Ireland has been singled out for this prestigious award. Tourism Ireland has been working hard to build awareness of the island of Ireland as a premier holiday destination among Chinese consumers. I am confident that this award will enhance the reputation of the island of Ireland and help to attract more Chinese visitors in the future.”
The event was attended by more than 1,000 senior management and decision-makers from the Chinese travel and tourism industry.
