Athlone played host to a group of top journalists from France last weekend. Invited here by Tourism Ireland in Paris, their itinerary was put together by Fáilte Ireland. The journalists - from leading French newspapers and magazines - were here specifically to find out more about cruising holidays on the River Shannon and to experience at first-hand the spectacular scenery and the wealth of things to see and do in this part of the island.
They began their cruise at Portumna and stopped off for a guided tour at Clonmacnoise. During the weekend, they also spent time in Athlone where they visited Athlone Castle and they enjoyed dinner at Glasson Golf Hotel.
Billy Condon, Tourism Ireland France, said: “Media visits such as these are extremely important to help build awareness of Athlone and the wonderful cruising product of the River Shannon among potential holidaymakers in France. The publicity value of the articles these journalists will write is fantastic – they will be read by many hundreds of thousands of potential visitors.
“The island of Ireland has a wealth of waterways and cruising on the Shannon offers French visitors a truly relaxing and unique experience. Tourism Ireland in France has an extensive promotional programme in place for 2009; cruising is just one of the activities we are promoting, highlighting Athlone and the River Shannon as a fantastic cruising destination. It is absolutely essential that we convey the message that there has never been a better time for French people to visit the island of Ireland.”
