Dutch Journalists Get A Taste For West Cork

21 Sep 2009

The superb cuisine of West Cork was the ‘order of the day’ for a group of top lifestyle journalists from the Netherlands who enjoyed a gourmet fact-finding visit here at the weekend.

Invited to West Cork by Tourism Ireland in Amsterdam, the journalists’ itinerary was put together by Fáilte Ireland.  They were here to experience the annual Taste of West Cork Food Festival in Skibbereen and also took in a visit to the Skibbereen Farmers Market.  One of the highlights of their visit was a seafood cookery lesson at Inishbeg Cookery School in Baltimore with celebrity chef Clodagh McKenna.

John Walsh, Tourism Ireland’s Manager in the Netherlands, said: “The visit of these influential journalists is an excellent opportunity to showcase West Cork as a premier holiday destination with an outstanding food product to a wide audience in the Netherlands.  They were extremely impressed by the excellence of the home-produced artisan food and the high quality of the food experience in general here.  Media visits such as this are extremely important in helping to build the profile of West Cork and the island of Ireland; the publicity value of the articles these journalists will write is fantastic – they will be read by thousands of potential Dutch holidaymakers.

“The Netherlands is an important market for tourism to Ireland, last year delivering 162,000 visitors and we in Tourism Ireland are pulling out all the stops to win business and to keep Ireland and Co Cork ‘top of mind’ with the Dutch consumer.  Our autumn promotional campaign is in full swing right now, highlighting that the island of Ireland is a great place to visit, is easily accessible and offers tremendous value for money.”
