1M Germans to see Athlone and Lakelands Region on TV

07 Sep 2009

Images of Athlone and Ireland’s Lakelands Region will be broadcast into 1 million homes across Germany later this year, as one of the country’s regional TV stations, NDR TV, was filming on location here last week.

Organised by Tourism Ireland in Germany in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, the TV crew spent one week here, filming for a popular programme called Nordseereport which has total viewership figures of about 1 million.  The focus of the programme is cruising on the Shannon, highlighting the variety of things to see and do along the way; footage will include traditional music in Seán’s Bar in Athlone, Wineport Lodge, as well as Birr Castle and the boglands around Shannonbridge in Co Offaly.

Tina Gauges, Tourism Ireland’s Manager of Central Europe, said: “We are absolutely delighted that NDR TV has chosen to film in Athlone and the Lakelands Region this week.  It is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the very best of what this part of Ireland has to offer to a huge German audience; from the stunning and diverse scenery of the lakes, to the charming towns and villages and important historic sites like Clonmacnoise, and not forgetting the strongest asset – the warm welcome of the local people.  The publicity value of a programme like this is incalculable; it really is an excellent way of promoting the wonderful cruising and tourism product in Athlone and the Lakelands Region to a mass audience.”

“Germany is a very important market for tourism and last year we welcomed 470,000 German visitors to the island of Ireland.  We have a strong and comprehensive promotional programme under way in Germany this year, with significant emphasis on value for money offers, to drive home to German consumers our message about the superb range of offers available in the Lakelands Region and across the island of Ireland.”
