1.4 Million People to see Wicklow on Belgian TV

17 Apr 2009

Wicklow has been chosen as the location for eight episodes of a popular Belgian soap opera called Thuis (meaning Home).  The soap – featuring the magnificent scenery of Co Wicklow – will be seen by over 1.4 million viewers throughout Belgium, when the programme airs on national TV channel EEN in May and again in September.

With the assistance of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, the show’s producers scouted Wicklow recently and filming took place this week on location around the county, in places like Glendalough and Laragh.  The eight episodes will feature a newly-married couple from the soap coming to Ireland for their honeymoon.  The couple will experience the wonderful hospitality of the local people and view the beautiful scenery of counties Wicklow and Wexford, taking in a number of iconic visitor attractions including Glendalough.

Danielle Neyts, Tourism Ireland Belgium, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase Wicklow to the Belgian market.  The publicity value of a programme like ‘Thuis’ is incalculable.  It is one of the most popular TV programmes in Belgium and the wonderful scenery of Wicklow will be seen by millions of potential holidaymakers.

“Tourism Ireland has an extensive promotional programme in place for 2009, highlighting Wicklow and the island of Ireland as a fantastic holiday destination.  It is absolutely essential that we convey the message that there has never been a better time for Belgians to visit the island of Ireland.”
