The Hallowe’en festivities in Londonderry were the first stop on a four-day visit to Northern Ireland last week for a group of Swedish journalists. The travel specialists were joined by eight prize-winners, also from the Nordic region, who entered a Tourism Ireland competition to win the trip to Northern Ireland. The visit was organised by Tourism Ireland, in association with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.
Steven Roberts, Tourism Ireland’s Manager for the Nordic Region, said, “As well as the spectacle of Hallowe’en which Londonderry offers, the journalists were fascinated by the history of Northern Ireland – both ancient and modern.
“The Nordic region is an important market for tourism to the island of Ireland, last year delivering 259,000 visitors. Familiarisation visits to Northern Ireland by influential travel media such as these are extremely important; they get to experience at first-hand the tremendous buzz of the towns and cities and the friendliness of the people. This visit will result in extensive and positive publicity for the city of Derry and Northern Ireland across a range of different publications throughout Sweden.”
In addition, this trip included the winners of an eMarketing promotion, selected from 50,000 people from the four Nordic countries who signed up to receive an eNewsletter about holidaying in Northern Ireland. After enjoying Hallowe’en in the North West the group visited the Giant’s Causeway, the Old Bushmills Distillery and enjoyed a tour of Belfast incorporating the Titanic, Cathedral and Queen’s Quarters.
