Decision making
German holidaymakers who are travelling to the island of Ireland tend to be mature adult couples in full time employment. Many are from Southern Germany with a significant number from the North Rhine/Westphalia region. They cite relaxation and a break from routine as their main motivations for taking a holiday.
Demographics
The majority of German visitors are interested in Irish culture and sight-seeing but there has been an increase in the number of people who come here for hill walking and hiking. German visitors account for a significant portion of all revenue from mainland Europe with one of the highest average spends per visit. Hotels and guest houses continue to be popular and Germans are likely to pay for high standards of accommodation.
Transport
The majority of German holidaymakers to the island come here by air, reflecting the growth of the short stay market and an increase in the number of routes between Irish and German airports. There has been a decrease in the numbers using a car while on holidays and a corresponding decrease in ferries as a method of travel.
