For the second year running, Ireland has been named “best tourism destination” by frequent travellers in the United States. In a survey conducted during 2013, more than 22,000 readers of American travel magazine Global Traveler named Ireland their favourite tourism destination overall.
The magazine asked its business and luxury traveller readers to select their favourite destination, airline and other travel-related products and services – and Ireland took the number one spot for “best tourism destination”. The award ceremony will be held later today (10 December), in Los Angeles, and will be attended by travel industry leaders.
Niall Gibbons, Tourism Ireland’s CEO, said: “We are delighted that Ireland has been singled out once again for this accolade by the readers of Global Traveler magazine. Travellers nowadays have tremendous choice, which makes it more important than ever for us to ensure the island of Ireland stands out from other destinations – so this award is really good news, particularly as we prepare to kick off our extensive 2014 promotional drive in the all-important US market.
“2013 is set to be a record year for visitor numbers to Ireland from North America. By the end of this year, we will have welcomed over one million American visitors – contributing some US$1 billion to our economy. Tourism Ireland has had a very busy programme of promotions right throughout 2013, building awareness of the island of Ireland as a premier vacation destination among American consumers. We look forward to building on this year’s success in 2014 and beyond.”
This is the tenth year of the Global Traveler's GT Tested Reader Survey awards, presented annually to recognise the most outstanding destinations, airlines, hotels, frequent flyer programmes and other travel-related services. The survey and awards are organised by Global Traveler magazine, a monthly travel magazine which has a circulation of almost 110,000.
