Hundreds of Vikings are set to descend on St Anne’s Park in Raheny in Dublin next weekend – for the Battle of Clontarf Re-enactment, the largest battle re-enactment ever held in Ireland. A spectacular dress rehearsal for the ‘battle’ took place in southern Sweden this weekend, at the Fotevikens Museum in Höllviken.
Tourism Ireland is using the 1,000th anniversary of the famous Battle of Clontarf as a ‘hook’ to shine a spotlight on Ireland in Scandinavia right now. A busy programme of PR and publicity activity, as well as social media, is reminding prospective holidaymakers there about the historical links between their countries and ours – and inviting them to come and discover Dublin and the many other sites and attractions in Ireland with Viking connections.
Aileen Hickey, Tourism Ireland’s manager for the Nordic region, said: “The 1,000th anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf presents us with a wonderful opportunity to shine a spotlight on Ireland in Scandinavia and remind people in Norway, Sweden and Denmark about the historical links between their countries and ours. We are inviting them to attend next weekend’s re-enactment of the Battle of Clontarf or to come and discover some of the many fascinating sites and attractions in Ireland with Viking connections during 2014.”
Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland have invited a group of influential travel and lifestyle journalists – from Norway, Sweden and Denmark – to attend next weekend’s Battle of Clontarf re-enactment. They will enjoy a fun Viking Splash Tour in Dublin and will explore some of our other Viking-related sites and attractions – including the Clontarf 1014 exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland, the Viking ‘Big Dig’ at Dublinia, Glendalough and Waterford.
