Representatives of Sligo County Council, who were in New York over the St Patrick’s Day period, met with senior executives from Tourism Ireland in New York. They were briefed on Tourism Ireland’s extensive promotional programme for 2014, which is in full swing right now and aims to build on the growth in American visitors to Ireland in 2013.
Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s head of North America, said: “2013 was the strongest years ever for visitors to Ireland from North America – even surpassing the previous best year of 2007. North America is an extremely important market for tourism to the island of Ireland; these visitors stay longer, spend more than average and tour more extensively around Ireland. We are undertaking strong campaigns in the US, highlighting the many great reasons to visit Ireland in 2014. The Wild Atlantic Way, Causeway Coastal Route, Limerick City of Culture and the Grande Partenza (or ‘Big Start’) of the Giro d’Italia are some of the major themes being highlighted by Tourism Ireland this year.”
Millions of people across the US are seeing ads and holiday features for the island of Ireland this spring. Golf and business tourism promotions, e-marketing and social media activities, consumer shows like the Philadelphia Flower Show and Canada Blooms, as well as a series of sales blitzes across the US, will keep the island of Ireland ‘front of mind’ for potential American travellers this year. In addition, positive publicity worth close to €100 million will be generated by Tourism Ireland in the United States this year. Promoting Shannon Airport and the west of Ireland remains a priority; advertising on key websites is highlighting the new year-round flights to Shannon from Boston (which began in February) and from New York (which begin at the end of March).
