International Spotlight on Limerick

Millions of people around the world will be reading all about Limerick over the coming weeks and months – following the visit of journalists from ten different countries over the weekend. Representing various travel and lifestyle publications – from the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, India and Belgium – the journalists were invited here by Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland to experience some of the many things to see and do in Limerick – and then inspire their readers to come and experience the city and this year’s City of Culture programme for themselves.

During their time here, the journalists visited the University of Limerick and enjoyed a walking tour of Georgian Limerick. They met with the Limerick City of Culture team at No 2 Pery Square, when they heard all about the exciting programme of events taking place this year. That evening, they enjoyed the Culinary Carnival Banquet in the Culture & Chips Spiegeltent.

The group’s itinerary included visits to King John’s Castle, St Mary’s Cathedral and the Hunt Museum; as well as a fun kayaking tour on the River Shannon. The journalists visited the EVA International project at the Limerick City Gallery of Art; and some of the group also attended the Limerick Sings International Choral Festival in St Mary’s Cathedral. On their final day here, the group visited Lough Gur, enjoyed lunch in The Old Bakehouse in Bruff (made famous last week by the visit of ‘Kimye’!) and the Foynes Flying Boat Museum.  They stayed at the Savoy Hotel.  

The first ever designation of national City of Culture for Limerick presents Tourism Ireland with a wonderful opportunity to increase awareness of the city around the world as a cultural and historic destination. Tourism Ireland is highlighting Limerick City of Culture in its promotions – taking every opportunity to leverage the tourism benefits of this year-long celebration of culture for the city. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to invite this group of journalists to Limerick, to experience the City of Culture celebrations and some of the many things to see and do in the city and its environs. Throughout 2014, we are taking every opportunity to shine a spotlight on Limerick, in our promotions around the world – leveraging the tourism benefits of this year-long celebration of culture for the city and showcasing Limerick as a cultural and historic destination.
