Taking a Swing for Golf in New Jersey

29 Aug 2013

A number of Irish golf tourism operators travelled to the United States last week, to join Tourism Ireland at the 2013 Barclays PGA Championship at the Liberty National Golf Course, in New Jersey.

Golf is a major focus for Tourism Ireland in the US and the organisation has a busy programme of promotions under way in key American cities and gateway areas, to grow the number of golf tourists for Ireland in 2013 and beyond. Tourism Ireland is working hard to drive home the message that a golfing holiday here is about much more than a round of 18 holes – the combination of Ireland’s world-class golf and our unique brand of hospitality plays a key role in attracting golfers to come here.

Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s head of North America, said: “The island of Ireland boasts some really fantastic golf courses and our presence at this year’s Barclays tournament provided an excellent opportunity for Tourism Ireland, together with our partners, to showcase that superb golf product to thousands of American golf fans. We have a busy promotional programme under way in the US, and in other key markets around the world, to encourage more people to consider a golfing holiday in Ireland – which includes capitalising on the success of our major golf champions as ambassadors for the island of Ireland.

“The US is an extremely important market for golf, and for tourism to the island of Ireland in general, and we believe we are on course to achieve our best year ever from that market. The most recent figures from the CSO showed a very positive start to 2013, with the strongest first half performance ever from North America. This year, we hope to welcome over one million American visitors, spending about US$1 billion.”
