Congratulating Rory McIlroy on becoming the number one golfer in the world, having won the Honda Classic yesterday in Florida, Niall Gibbons, Tourism Ireland’s chief executive, said: “This is a tremendous achievement for Rory and we are absolutely delighted for him. He is a fantastic ambassador for golf and for Northern Ireland and this achievement has placed golf in Northern Ireland, once more, to the forefront of everyone’s mind. Tourism Ireland will be working hard to capitalise on this in the US, in Great Britain and in our other golf markets around the world, inviting potential holidaymakers to come and visit the ‘Home of Champions’.”
Rory McIlroy’s success is a wonderful opportunity for Tourism Ireland to showcase golf in Northern Ireland to potential visitors around the world. In the all-important American market, golf is a major focus for Tourism Ireland right now. A six-week advertising campaign, featuring a brand new, 60-second Northern Ireland golf ad, has just kicked off on the extremely popular Golf Channel, airing to millions of golf enthusiasts around big tournaments like this weekend’s Honda Classic in Florida. This is supported by extensive online advertising for Northern Ireland on the TV channel’s website www.golfchannel.com.
A Tourism Ireland event at the upcoming US Masters in Augusta, in April, will target influential golf media, focusing particularly on the Irish Open at Royal Portrush. This year’s Irish Open is being used to draw attention to our world-class golf. Tourism Ireland is urging American golf fans to come and attend the Irish Open and to extend their trip to try out some of our other fantastic courses. As well as the US Masters, Tourism Ireland will also have a presence – with partners – at two PGA events in the US this year, The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship. Just recently a number of Northern Ireland golf tourism partners joined Tourism Ireland in Florida, promoting to potential golf holidaymakers and influential golf media at the PGA Golf Merchandise Show in Orlando.
