South African Journalists Check Out Northern Ireland

06 Sep 2012

Leading travel and lifestyle journalists from South Africa visited Northern Ireland this week on a fact-finding trip. The writers – from publications like the South African Sunday Times travel supplement, the AA Traveller magazine and Signature Magazine (the publication for Diners Club card members), with a combined circulation of over 630,000 readers around South Africa – were invited here by Tourism Ireland, in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

As well as a visit to Belfast, which included City Hall and Titanic Belfast, and the TITANICa exhibition at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Cultra, the group made their way along the Causeway Coastal route, stopping off at the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge and the Giant’s Causeway. The final day of their visit took them to Londonderry, where they explored the city on a walking tour of the historic walls.

Jim Paul, Tourism Ireland’s head of Australia and Developing Markets, said: “Visits such as this are an excellent opportunity to showcase the high standard and variety of tourism product on offer in Northern Ireland for potential South African visitors. The publicity value of the articles these journalists will write is fantastic – they will be read by over 630,000 potential holidaymakers around South Africa, who we know have an interest in travel.

“The superb programme of new attractions, events and historic anniversaries taking place in Northern Ireland this year presents us with a significant opportunity to deliver a new message to people in South Africa about Northern Ireland and to show them why they should choose to come here. Tourism Ireland’s promotions around the world continue to capitalise on this unprecedented opportunity, highlighting the strengths of Northern Ireland – iconic experiences, our warm, friendly people and great value for money.”
