The Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) announced today that it will hold its 2013 annual conference in Londonderry. Tourism Ireland, the organisation responsible for promoting Northern Ireland overseas as a leading business and holiday destination, will sponsor the conference and has warmly welcomed the announcement.
ABPCO members organise an estimated 3,500 conferences and events worldwide each year, for in excess of a massive one million delegates; the association comprises almost 150 members involved in the management of national and international conferences, seminars, meetings, exhibitions and other events. Key influencers and decision-makers involved in conference and event management from around Great Britain are expected to attend the 2013 conference in Derry.
This year’s conference is being held this week in London’s Barbican Centre, where the venue for the 2013 conference was announced today. Welcoming the news, Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “I am delighted to learn that ABPCO’s 2013 annual conference will take place in Londonderry. It is a huge coup to host a prestigious event like this and Tourism Ireland has been delighted to play a role in securing this event for the city. Given that ABPCO members organise conferences and events for about one million delegates worldwide each year, the 2013 annual conference has the potential to deliver a major boost for business tourism to Londonderry, the North West and Northern Ireland in 2013 and beyond.
“It really is a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the city as a premier location for conferences and events with such an influential group. Business tourism is an important, high yield sector which can deliver significant economic benefits and Tourism Ireland is working hard to promote Northern Ireland as a premier destination for meetings, conferences and events.”
Tourism Ireland is also planning a busy programme of promotional activity around the globe to showcase Derry~Londonderry’s UK City of Culture year in 2013.
