NORTHERN IRELAND GOLF TO THE ‘FORE’ WITH PETER ALLISS

Iconic golf commentator and TV presenter Peter Alliss has been supporting Tourism Ireland’s ‘Home of Champions’ campaign in Great Britain recently, to help spread the word there about Northern Ireland’s world-class golf. 

Alliss, the man known as ‘the voice of golf’, conducted a series of radio interviews for BBC and numerous commercial radio stations – reaching over 12 million listeners in almost every part of Britain. Alliss talked at length about golf courses in Northern Ireland – including Royal Portrush, Royal County Down and Malone and about his own experience of playing them.

When recording the various radio interviews, Alliss said: ”Northern Ireland not only has some of the best golf courses in the world, they now also have the best players. The success of Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell has led many commentators to label Northern Ireland as the golfing capital of the world. The fact that they can now boast three major winning golfers in the space of 13 months gives them an unprecedented opportunity to show the rest of the world just what makes Northern Ireland’s golfing offering so very special.”

David Boyce, Tourism Ireland’s head of business and sports tourism in GB, said: “Tourism Ireland is focused on growing the number of golf visitors to Northern Ireland and capitalising on the tremendous positive publicity around the globe surrounding the extraordinary wins of our golfers. Golf is the world’s largest sports-related travel market and Tourism Ireland is working hard to drive home the message that a golfing holiday in Northern Ireland is about much more than a round of 18 holes – the combination of Northern Ireland’s world-class golf and unique brand of hospitality plays a key role in attracting golfers to come here.”

Tourism Ireland is planning the most extensive programme of marketing activity and campaigns ever undertaken for Northern Ireland for next year, to capitalise on NI 2012 and to maximise visitor numbers. Golf will be just one of the many messages which will be used to put Northern Ireland on the global stage in a completely new way, to capture and hold the focus of world attention for all the most positive reasons.
