Golf tourism operators joined Tourism Ireland in Sweden, on the eve of the Nordea Masters, for a promotion which targeted key Swedish golf media and travel trade contacts, highlighting our world-class golf and the upcoming Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle. The Nordea Masters is the largest golf tournament in the Nordic region, attracting over 100,000 spectators each year.
Tourism Ireland is rolling out a ‘Major’ golf tourism campaign right now, to capitalise on Darren Clarke’s great British Open victory at Royal St George’s and previous wins by Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell in the US Open championship. The golf market remains a priority for Tourism Ireland, in Sweden and other important golf markets, and the organisation has a busy promotional programme under way throughout 2011, designed to boost golf visitors from overseas.
Aoife Kernan, Tourism Ireland’s Manager in the Nordic Region, said: “With about 650,000 registered golfers, Sweden is an important market for golf tourism to the island of Ireland. The Solheim Cup takes place in Killeen Castle this September and Tourism Ireland is exploiting every potential promotional opportunity in Sweden – including a strong presence at key events such as the Nordea Masters – to capitalise on the potential of this prestigious sporting event. It is a great opportunity for us to put Ireland in the spotlight, highlighting the island as a top golf destination.”
Tourism Ireland promotions, using the headline ‘Golf in Ireland – Time to Play’, are highlighting great golf deals, to drive home to Swedish golfers the superb range of offers available on courses right around the island of Ireland. Tourism Ireland is also working with the Swedish Ladies’ Golf Association, the Swedish PGA and with accredited Swedish golf tour operators to bring golfers here for the Solheim Cup and to experience the island’s great golf.
