America’s most recognised and respected travel expert, and travel editor of CBS News, Peter Greenberg, hosted his radio show from Dromoland Castle in Co Clare this week. The show will broadcast to a massive audience of approximately 3 million listeners on 400 radio stations across the United States. It focuses on holidays and travel tips for the West of Ireland and includes interviews with six local people working in the tourism industry, including Tony Kirby of Heart of Burren Walks, Margaret O’Shaughnessy of Foynes Flying Boat Museum, genealogist Annette O’Brien and ‘foodie’ Peter O’Brien of Country Choice in Nenagh.
The visit of Peter Greenberg and the CBS crew was arranged by Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, in conjunction with Shannon Development. Peter Greenberg broadcasts his radio show from different locations around the world each week, offering plenty of helpful travel advice and recommendations.
In addition to the radio broadcast, Greenberg will feature in ten videos which are being filmed this week for the AARP – the American Association of Retired Persons, which has approximately 40 million members aged 50+ across the US. The theme of the ten videos is ‘Travel to the West of Ireland’ and footage will be captured in counties Clare, Limerick, Galway and Kerry. These videos will feature on the AARP website and will be shown this autumn on the Tourism Ireland stand at the popular AARP Life @ 50 show in Orlando, which attracts about 25,000 visitors each year.
Joe Byrne, Tourism Ireland’s Executive Vice President United States and Canada, said: “We are delighted that Peter Greenberg and his crew have chosen to visit the Shannon Region and the West. His broadcast on CBS and the videos for AARP are fantastic opportunities for Tourism Ireland to showcase and describe the wonderful tourism product on offer in this part of Ireland and to encourage more Americans to vacation here. It is an excellent way of raising the profile of the West of Ireland to a mass audience. Tourism Ireland has a strong promotional programme under way right now in the US. We know that hundreds of thousands of Americans will take a holiday between now and the end of the year; we aim to win as much of that business as possible.”
Gillian Binchy, Trade Marketing Manager with Fáilte Ireland, welcomed the arrival of CBS to Ireland - “This is an exciting opportunity to ensure that millions of Americans hear all about the wonderful attractions of the West of Ireland. More than nine out of ten visitors who came to this country expressed satisfaction with our scenery and landscapes and, interestingly, American visitors also put a high premium on Irish history and culture. This CBS broadcast will nicely highlight both these key assets.
“We are also particularly pleased that Peter will be making a series of programmes for the over 50s in America. This market, particularly in the current economic climate, has more disposable income and is more likely to travel – offering great potential, including in America. Fáilte Ireland is delighted to arrange for these broadcasts to take place.”
