100 Million ‘Foodies’ in North America to see Celebrity Chef Prepare Fermanagh's Finest

16 Jun 2010

Colourful ‘celebrity’ Canadian chef Massimo Capra and his TV crew discovered the culinary delights of Fermanagh during a visit to Belle Isle Cookery School earlier this week.

Chef Massimo was joined by Belle Isle’s Liz Moore, to record a programme for his new series The Market Chef, which will air to an estimated 100 million households this autumn across the US and Canada on popular TV channel the Food Network.

The visit was organised by Tourism Ireland in Toronto in conjunction with NITB.  Footage shot in Fermanagh features Liz and Massimo visiting local producers, to source some of the area’s top quality produce.  The programme will show them in O’Doherty’s Butchers in Enniskillen, where they met prize-winning butcher, Pat O’Doherty.  Then it was on to Lisbellaw to meet bee-keeper John Orr and to Orchard Acre Farm in Irvinestown where they harvested fresh herbs – all of which were used to create a special menu for guests at Belle Isle Castle.

Jayne Shackleford, Tourism Ireland Canada, commented: “We are delighted that Massimo has chosen to film in Fermanagh, bringing a flavour of Northern Ireland into North American homes.  The quality and high standard of our food is a key theme being promoted by Tourism Ireland and this is a tremendous opportunity to highlight and showcase the wonderful food and tourism product of Fermanagh in a fun and engaging way to a huge North American audience.

“The publicity value of a TV programme such as this is incalculable.  It is an excellent way of raising the profile of Northern Ireland as a superb food tourism destination to a mass audience.  Canada and the United States are key markets for tourism to Northern Ireland and we have a very strong and comprehensive promotional programme under way for 2010.”
